Coast to Coast – A Michigan Triple Threat

On a sunny weekend in February I had the ambition to visit three amazing places all located in different parts of Michigan. From Detroit to Lansing to Whitehall, I visited destinations that give you a true Michigander experience and pay tribute to the history of the mitten state.

Fox Theater

You would think I was a history buff with the older buildings and businesses I become drawn to in the Lower Peninsula, and it’s no secret the Fox Theater is one of my favorites. Built in the 1920’s, the Fox Theater has a pretty rough history. It began as an elaborate theater for everything from concerts, to live plays, to even “talkies” (the first feature films to include sound). In the 1960’s and 70’s the condition on the theater started to decline and it crumbled during the rough years of Detroit. Then in the late 1980’s it was purchased by the Ilitch family and restored to the stunning spectacle we see today.

Now in its original glory the Fox Theater is truly an exuberant place to experience. The Art Deco design is filled with sculptures of animals like lions, eagles, and more notably the elephant head atop the stage. Once you walk through the front doors you are time traveled to a century of glamorous outings to the theater. From the entrance of the lobby, to the long-curved staircases, all the way to the main bathroom entrance, you will want to take photos of more than just the show you are attending.

To any first-time attendees, I recommend sitting in the balcony/mezzanine. The upper level will give you an excellent view of the detail in the gold moldings and dome. And with stadium seating, there is no bad seat in the house. Every time I visit the Fox Theater I can never stop starring at the architecture.

The State Capitol is one of the most iconic buildings in Michigan. Designated as a historical landmark, the Michigan Capitol was built in 1879. Going to a State Capitol may sound like something only meant for 2nd grade field trips, but the State Capitol in Michigan is a must see for any visitor to the lower peninsula. The architecture of the building alone would catch any photographers eye. To many locals, the State Capitol steps are an ideal location for professional photo opportunities like engagements and weddings. (Fun Fact: even my little sister had her Senior Year pictures done on the Capitol steps in January.)

But the outside of the building is only the beginning. The most jaw dropping characteristic is the inner dome. When arriving on the first-floor visitors are instantly drawn to the glass floor of the rotunda. Designed as an optical illusion, you gravitate to the center where it feels you are walking in a bowl. That is when you look up.

The breath-taking designs show handcrafted molds, delicately painted figures, and a bright starry sky in the center. If you are ever in the Capital City of Michigan, you will want to get a tour of this remarkable building.

Fetch Brewing Company

On the west coast of Michigan, in the town of Whitehall sits a diamond in the rough. In the middle of the quaint downtown, mixed with antique stores and local restaurants is Fetch Brewing Company.

Located in a historic bank, this microbrewery introduced me to a beer drinking experience unlike any other. Of course they offer delicious brews with hysterical names like “Pleasure Pit”, "Corduroy Boy", and "Smackintosh" but what is one thing they don’t offer? Food.

Aside from bar snack mixes don’t expect to order a burger with a side of fries. Instead, customers are encouraged to bring their meal of choice. From take out pizzas, to a drive thru bag, Fetch Brewing Company welcomes your favorite foods. If you’re a rookie like myself and realize you were hungry after all, never fear! Local food trucks will often line the streets of downtown Whitehall and they make for a perfect stop before you open a bar tab.

Fetch Brewing Company also offers mug memberships. Every time you visit, your beer is poured into a hand crafted mug made by local pottery artists. Fetch Brewing Company is definitely a pleasant surprise for those who love a good brew. You walk through the doors and travel back in time with the original bank vault and service elevator, all while enjoying a cold beverage in a drink venue with a modern twist.
